The prison population has exploded in the last 3 decades, along with the cost of maintaining the incarceration of those prisoners. We currently incarcerate at about 5 times the rate of other 1st world countries. Yet our recidivism rates are among the worst in the world.

This post is a letter to Senator Boozman, explaining some of the reasons that federal prisons are so costly, inefficient, and ineffective at the performance of their core functions. I AM NOT asking for any more taxpayer funds. I’m asking Mr. Boozman to break down bureaucratic barriers, so federal prison inmates can earn part of their own way, pay the costs of the improvements sought, and learn skills that will reduce recidivism. If implemented, these proposed changes will save the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, while simultaneously improving the correctional outcomes achieved.
